How to select a mooring line

How to select a mooring line

Selecting a mooring line is relative simple and only 2 factors are playing a major role in this.

First of all the legth of the rope. It is - in general - decided that the length of a mooring line is a factor 1.0 to 1.5 in relation to the the length of the boat. A boat length of 10 meter would result in a mooring line with a length of between 10 and 15 meter. Smaller boats tend to use 1.5 where the larger boats will use the 1.0 factor.  Our ready made mooring lines can all be used for boat lengths up to 15 meter.

The diameter of the rope is usually based on the weight of the boat. Since this is most of the time related to the length, this relation is also common. Next, you need to consider the size and location of the boulder which can limit the diameter of the mooring line. As a guideline:

Diameter (mm)
Recommended boat length
12
7-11 m
14
9-13 m
16
11-15 m
18
14-17 m
20
16-19 m

Some Hints:

  • For the protection of the ropes we suggest the use of mooring springs.
  • During winter, it is recommended to wrinse the ropes in fresh water before storing them - preferabel in a dry environment.
