Fiber that has been spun out off para-aramide have a extremely high break strength, low weight and a low elongtation. Thefibers can also resist relative high temperatures. The breakgin strength of para aramide is between 5 to 8 times higher compared to steel (with the same weight). Aramides were produced for the first time in the laboratiesof DuPont.
Aramide is available under the brands Kevlar and Twaron. Both are close to the same fiber. Properties of Aramide ropes are low elongation, high breaking strength and little creep. The material is however sensative to UV light and can not be used without a core.
The use of Aramid is however limited. Most of the sailors use Dyneema or Spectra instead of Aramid.
