Now that the season has started we get some remarks that (for example) 12mm dyneema lines are offered for less than our prices? What about it?
In the first place Dyneema (as the most expensive component in a rope ) is traded on a global scale / global market place. This means that everybody pays about the same price. Differences in price can only be made because of large volume deals and even then it is only marginal. Now this can not be the reason. What can be?
Savings in production cost can be achieved. Most plants (especially the larger ones) have already optimized their processes so there is little difference. Well, where does it come from?
There are 3 main reasons:
(1) The production process - and therefor the properties of the rope - can vary . An example is (an example from our own portfolio) D-F1 and D-F2. Both ropes are made of 100% Dyneema SK75 so that's not the reason. The difference lies in the production process. The D-F2 line is undergoing a fewer number of pre-processing steps which reduces cost. This has however an impact on the specifications.
(2) The percentage of Dyneema in a rope can be significantly different. Sometimes ropes can be a mixture of Polyester and Dyneema. D-F1 however (as an example) is pure 100% Dyneema. This will show however in the specifications (weight, since Dyneema is a lot lighter than Polyester) and Breakingstrength.
(3) The marketing budgets can also be very different. Some spend a lot of money on advertizing and / or sponsoring - some don't. And next to that, there is the obvious difference between the online and the offline world - the fixed cost for physical shops are (in most cases) significantly higher than for online shops . And both cost will be paid by the consumer - i.e. you.
So: Look at the facts. Don't be (mis-) guided by sales pitchesfacts behind the line. Try to identify what type of rope fits best your personal situation. Look at the elongation, the average load, the possible creep and the handling. We do not have the illusion to be able to deliver a rope for every purpose. What we do is to deliver ropes with clear specifications for very competative prices. Nothing more and nothing less.
